ORSON STOOD AMID THE CARNAGE and surveyed the area.

His men were dead, the carriage abandoned, and the woman gone. He’d sent out trackers to locate a trail, but as of yet, nothing. His breath caught as he considered his master’s reaction to the news of Sylvan’s escape. It was quite possible he would not survive the telling.

“Sir.”

Spinning to the approaching soldier, Orson recognized him as a young officer who’d been ordered to stay behind to destroy any evidence around the area of Sylvan’s cabin.

“Sir.” The soldier slid to a halt before Orson. Though Mikel’s second-in-command was small, he was imposing. The men knew how harsh a leader he could be. Failure was dealt with quickly and severely.

With a pant, the soldier caught his breath.

Never one for patience, Orson raised an eyebrow. “Well?”

“Sir, I came directly to tell you . . .” Gasping again, the soldier bent over and pulled in a breath, coughing.

Orson squinted and studied the soldier, contemplating his murder when the man caught a full breath, stood, and said, “The villagers, the villagers said the woman has a child.”

Orson had just been turning away—planning on dealing with the soldier later—when his words sank in. He froze.

With a glance over his shoulder, he slowly turned to again face the soldier.

“A child? Are you certain?”

“Yes sir. A daughter. Maya. They said her name is Maya.”

Orson paced slowly away, his mind working furiously.

A daughter. What could this mean for my master’s plan? Where is the girl now?

He gestured to the soldier. The man hustled to Orson, his face pale.

“Take two trackers. Go back to the cabin and find the girl’s trail. She must be around their home. Find her.”

Nodding quickly, the soldier turned and ran to the camp.

Already moving on with his plans. Orson contemplated his master’s reaction to this news. Would it be good or bad? If he found the child, it just might save his neck.
